This is a really awesome antique jug from the late 1800s. The vintage advertising on the front also carries and interesting and compelling story of government fraud. While doing research on this jug and company, I came across some interesting information that was captured by another seller of a similar 'No.1' jug. Wm Radam's was a company selling cure-all products to unsuspecting patrons across the country. Their provocative company imagery, branding and grand claims that their products could cure all diseases brought them warehouse level success and profits. In 1906 the U.S. Government passed the Pure Food & Drug Act, which resulted in the government raiding Wm. Radams warehouse, destroying all of the bottles and jugs they could find. Wm. Radam was charged with false advertising due to their "Microbe Killer" being manufactured using only 99% water and 1% acid. The fraudulent elixirs they were selling offered patrons no true medical benefit. Due to the destruction of all of their inventory, this particular jug of "Microb Killer" is definitely one of the jugs that was purchased by an unsuspecting and likely, hopeful customer. I love that this jug has hung around long enough to continue to tell this story about a time in our country when disease was plentiful and pathology, still in its infancy. This jug us made from white glazed (now aged off white) stoneware and does have crazing and wear consistent with its age. Other than the chips around its base (see listing photos) there are no other major defects. The cork in this jug is not antique but does come with the purchase.
