Antique Half Plate Daguerreotype in Leather Case

This large half plate antique Daguerreotype family portrait is in really beautiful condition for its age. The spine on the leather case is intact but does have minor splitting on one end (see listing photos) and the two original clasps appear to be missing. The tooled leather casing is in great condition and the copper boarder only exhibits minor marks of patina. Imaged on copper plate is a large family of 9 and dates back to the 1800s. The copper plate has been mounted under glass and wrapped with an ornate copper boarder. The velvet pillow on the inside of the tooled leather is in similarly beautiful condition.

A little history on the Daguerrotype:
Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process, widely used during the 1840s and 1850s. Invented by Louis Daguerre and introduced worldwide around 1839, the daguerreotype was almost completely superseded by 1856 with new, less expensive processes, such as ambrotype (collodion process), that yield more readily viewable images.

Once you remove an item's traces of age and patina it's not something you can reverse, so we leave those activities up to the buyer. SHIPPING
As much as possible, we utilize recycled shipping boxes. The box you receive your item in may show signs of wear and pre-use.

PHOTOGRAPHY
All photos are taken in natural light and we do not use any photo filters and do not perform and photo editing (other than basic photo cropping). Depending on your monitor settings, there may be subtle differences in color once you see your item in person.
